Mandela Trilogy - Freedom
“Nelson Mandela’s remarkable life story has been told many times, but never like this.”
The Guardian, UK

From traditional Xhosa choral music, to jazz and jive dancing of the 1950s township dance halls; from struggle songs of the 1980s, to the liberation music of the 1990s, Mandela Trilogy celebrates the vibrant variety of South African music while dramatising the defining moments that shaped Nelson Mandela’s life.

Since its premiere at the Artscape in 2010, Mandela Trilogy has travelled from Africa to Europe to Asia, wowing audiences across nations, cultures and ages. Now it is heading home in triumph to celebrate Mandela’s centenary on 17 & 18 July.

Mandela Trilogy
Thato Machona, Musaneta Sakupwanya and Aubrey Lodewyk star as Nelson Mandela, with Philisa Sibeko and Siphamandla Yakupa sharing the role of?Winnie?Mandela. Cecilia Rangwanasha joins the cast as Mandela’s mother, with Fleur du Cap winner Edith Plaatjies making her CTO debut as Dolly.

CTO Associate Music Director Tim Murray returns to lead the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra through van Dijk and Campbell’s rousing score, which he has conducted to great acclaim in cities from London to Dubai, Ravenna to Hong Kong.

”An astonishingly provocative and hugely successful achievement… a magnificent cast and outstanding playing from the Cape Town Philharmonic under the exceptional Tim Murray.”
Classical Source, UK

“A sexy dose of jazz and the refined strains of Western opera and traditional Xhosa song drive a new opera about South Africa’s former president.”
The Washington Times

”Magnificent.”
The Telegraph, UK

“South Africa could rescue Opera… returning it to the passion, humanity, and personality that inspired the great operas in the first place.”
The Guardian, UK

“Sumptuous… A modern ‘Folk-Opera’ with electrifying choral singing… a very ambitious, highly successful tour de force.”
Abendzeitung, Germany
